Basic knitting stitches

Knit Stitch

  1. Insert the right needle in the first stitch on the left needle.
  2. With the right needle catch the yarn to form a loop towards the front of the work.
  3. The loop is now the new stitch on the right needle. Let the stitch slip off the left needle.

Purl Stitch

  1. Hold the yarn in front of the needle and slip the first stitch from the right needle to the left needle.

  2. Wrap the yarn around the needle and...

  3. ... draw this as a loop backwards. The first stitch is now on the right needle, let the stitch slip off the from the left needle.

TIP:

Many knitters find their stitches turn out bigger on the left as on the right. They were knitted more loosely. Make sure to pull the yarn after each individual stitch to keep even tension.
